Apple's visionary founder passes away at the age of 56.

The Apple (AAPL) board of directors this evening released a statement that founder Steve Jobs has passed away, after a long battle with cancer. It says:

We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today.

Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.

His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts.

Apple also has created a sparse website in Jobs' memory, and asked people to share thoughts, memories, and condolences, please email rememberingsteve@apple.com.

Jobs' family also released a statement, saying that "Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family."
