Moderna Therapeutics, a Cambridge, Mass.-based developer of a biotherapeutic platform that can stimulate the body's natural ability to produce therapeutic proteins, has raised more than $40 million in VC funding led by Flagship Ventures. www.modernatx.com

Next Step Living Inc., a Boston-based provider of residential energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions, has raised $18.2 million in Series C funding. VantagePoint Capital Partners led the round, and was joined by return backers Black Coral Capital and Mass Green Energy Fund. www.nextstepliving.com

Prismatic, a personalized social news discovery engine, has raised $15 million in Series A funding. Backers include Accel Partners, Breyer Capital and Yuri Milner. www.getprismatic.com

ClearStory Data, a Palo Alto, Calif.-based provider of big data analytics and visualization solutions, has raised $9 million in first-round funding. Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers led the round, and was joined by Andreessen Horowitz and Google Ventures. www.clearstorydata.com

Avelas Biosciences, a San Diego–based startup focused on visualizing cancerous lymph nodes in breast cancer patients, has raised $7.65 million in Series A funding led by Avalon Ventures. www.avelasbio.com

Powervation Ltd.
, an Ireland-based provider of digital power IC solutions, has raised $7 million in Series C funding. Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq: SMTC) led the round, and was joined by return backers Intel Capital, SEP, VentureTech Alliance and Braemar Energy Ventures. www.powervation.com

Innovative Trauma Care, a Canadian developer of point of injury solutions for trauma, first responder and military medicine applications, has raised C$3.64 million in Series A funding from undisclosed investors. www.innovativetraumacare.com
